Mercy Artists Visit Corpus Christi School
The senior art students at Mercy High School, as the most advanced Art students in the Visual Arts program, are offering their valuable experience working with young children in the arts, as part of a service learning component to their art curriculum and their membership in the new chapter of the National Art Honor Society here at Mercy. These Honors and AP Art students are dedicated to compassionate service, inspired by our foundress, Catherine McAuley, and have been planning for this visit for weeks.
Our students, guided and directed by their instructor, Nazira Kury-Arnold, visited the Kindergarten/First Grade class of Corpus Christi School in San Francisco, and taught these students Visual Arts on Friday. Corpus Christi is an elementary school in the Excelsior District of SF and is run by an order of the Salesian Sisters. A senior artist was paired with a K/1 student for one-on-one instruction in the Visual Arts, following the California Visual Arts Content Standards for Kindergarten/First Grade. Our Mercy students came up with the lesson plan, aligned it to the Art standards and prepared all the material for this lesson. Art education is a method of discovering each child’s skills and talents, while enhancing their creativity and self-expression. Learning experiences in the Arts contribute to the development of academic skills, including the areas of reading and language development, and mathematics. We believe that this service was not only a uniquely valuable experience for the community of Corpus Christi, but also for our Mercy students. We hope to visit again next month to foster the relationships our Mercy students have begun with their new art students!
